When it comes to historical significance, there are very few clubs that can match Aston Villa. Not only are they one of the oldest football clubs in Britain, but they are also the founders of the Football League, which was the premier league until the inception of the Premier League in 1992. In their early days, Villa was a dominant force in English football, claiming multiple First Division, FA Cup, and League Cup championships. They also hold the prestigious title of being one of just five English clubs to have lifted the European Cup/Champions League trophy.
The beloved Aston Villa, based in Birmingham, was established in 1874 by four cricket players who also had ties to the church. Soon after, the club expanded to include rugby and football sections, catering to those seeking winter activities. Aston Villa was actually founded about a year before their city rival Birmingham City (known as Small Heath Alliance until 1905).
In 1885, the club's president, William McGregor, recognized the importance of keeping fans engaged. Alongside eleven other top English clubs, Villa helped create the Football League in 1888. Under the leadership of George Ramsay, Aston Villa quickly established themselves as the dominant force of the Victorian era, winning five First Division titles and three FA Cups before the year 1900.
